Changing the Narrative on Perinatal Mental Health: What Does She Need?

Presented by Olivia Wedel, PhD, LPC-S, PMH-C, NCC

Session Description:

This presentation provides an overview of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), including postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, and psychosis, which can affect individuals during pregnancy and beyond the fourth trimester. The presentation explores risk factors, protective factors, prevalence, and how PMADs impact parents and infants from a lens of asking what moms need vs. 'what's wrong.' Participants will be able to identify symptoms, recognize disparities in accessing care, and search perinatal resources for support. Emphasis is placed on culturally responsive approaches and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. The goal is to equip participants with practical strategies for early identification, compassionate support, and appropriate referrals

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will be able to identify at least three differences between baby blues and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders

  2. Attendees will be able to list three risk and three protective factors for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

  3. Attendees will be able to identify disparities in access to care for historically underserved populations

  4. Attendees will be able to search the PSI Directory to obtain referrals for perinatal clients.
